COMMUNITY CALENDAR - NOVEMBER

Missing the Forest for the Trees: The Beauty of Petrified Wood
Now - January 18, 2009
@ Museum of the Earth in Ithaca, NY

http://www.museumoftheearth.org
We have all walked through forests in the fall when the leaves have begun their change from green into reds, oranges, and yellows. It is an experience of color that many cherish and look forward to each year. This fall, we invite you to celebrate the changing of the seasons with a journey to a different kind of forest, one where the trees are no longer living, but where they are just as colorful!  We hope you will join us on a journey millions for years into the forests of the past with an exhibit featuring the beauty of petrified wood. Marvel at the range of color captured in these magnificent crystalline specimens as you explore the science and the art of paleontology.  This exhibit is made possible by Elmira Savings Bank.

The calendars, posters, cards and T-shirts they publish are well-known; and the banners, drums, and willing bodies are a ready resource for just about any event designed to educate/agitate.  With this exhibit, titled SCW Inside-OUT, they celebrate their 25th anniversary with a behind-the-scenes look at some of the less obvious aspects of what it means to be an international "peace and justice publisher and distributor." Topics include: the poster process, from brainstorm to finished product; customer feedback when they don't get it right (and when they do); a poster/calendar collage wall featuring activist art spanning 30 years, and more. This exhibit promises to be a show filled with surprising, entertaining, and visually stimulating perspectives!
